Hounds for Heroes

We thought we would share some information about this wonderful charity

Hounds for Heroes is a UK registered charity who provide specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled personnel of both the UK Armed Forces and Emergency Services. We aim to provide help and practical support leading to an enhanced quality of life.

History of Hounds for Heroes

In 1991, Allen Parton was a Chief Petty Officer serving in the Royal Navy in the Gulf. A tragic operational incident changed his life completely. He spent five years in hospital before he was partnered with Endal, a yellow Labrador assistance dog. Endal saved his marriage, his relationship with his children and gave him hope for the future. Years later this amazing partnership inspired Allen to set up a charity to support ex-service people, and in 2010 Hounds for Heroes was born.

“It has been a dream of mine to have a Charity that works specifically for the people who routinely put their lives in danger. Hounds for Heroes is our chance of giving people the same changes that I have had”.

The need: Ability not Disability

As of 2021, there are over 900,000 injured servicemen and women in the country and that number continues to grow on a daily basis. The unique mental attitude of service personnel means that only a handful so far have chosen to have an assistance dog provided by the civilian offerings, many will battle on in silence. Many may have very extensive physical and degenerative disabilities which could be further compounded by mental health issues such as PTSD.

Hounds for Heroes dogs become a lifeline for someone who is battling with disability, bereavement, conflict and trauma on a daily basis. Our specially trained assistance dogs are taught to problem solve, and to be intuitive, they will remove the sense of disability in their partner’s life and replace it with a feeling of ability.
