On 12 Sep our Chief Executive visited the Veterans’ Gateway (VG) operation in Cardiff.

The contact centre is run by Connect Assist and Neil met with Alia Hussein and her team of advisors.

Neil spent time discussing the challenges the team faces and witnessing at first hand the excellent work they do to put veterans and their families in touch with the organisations best placed to help with the information, support and advice they need – including advice concerning Armed Forces Pensions.

Since Veterans’ Gateway was launched in April 2017, the Forces Pension Society has accounted for around 40% of all referrals – more than any other Referral Partner. In the last month alone, some 200 referrals have come to the Society via VG bringing the total number of referrals coming to us via VG to 3800.

An increasing number of previously unclaimed pensions are now being paid as a result of this work, in many cases helping veterans and their families climb out of difficult situations of indebtedness. In one recent case Bob, a former Army corporal who left the Army in 1978 after 10 years’ service and was struggling financially, was awarded an annual pension of almost £3,000 and a tax free lump sum of almost £9,000, plus back pension for the nearly 10 years that he hadn’t been claiming for! Great result for Bob and his family.

This work would not be possible without support from the Forces Pension Society Charitable Fund, to whom we are very grateful for meeting the costs associated with this charitable effort through 2019.
