Pensions Awareness Week – AFPS and Same Sex Relationships

September 14, 2018

As part of our daily contribution to ‘Pensions Awareness week’, we thought we would comment on the current position of the Armed Forces Pension Scheme (AFPS) in its dealings with same sex relationships.

The message is simply that the AFPS does not discriminate by sexual orientation. There has been much criticism of some other pensions schemes about whether same sex relationships are treated differently from male/female relationships particularly in the context of death benefits; This cannot be said of the Armed Forces pension schemes.

In the event of a death  scheme members’  benefits are paid in the same way to married spouses, civil partners, or eligible cohabitees, without differentiation on the grounds of sexual orientation.
