This article for the October issue of Pathfinder magazine  is written against the backdrop of the successful legal challenge by the Judges and Firefighters to the transitional arrangements that accompanied their new 2015 pension schemes.

Most Pathfinder readers will have benefits in more than one pension scheme as personnel under the age of 45 for AFPS75 and AFPS05 members were transferred to AFPS15 on 1 April 2015, with protected rights under their ’old’ scheme. Almost 5 years after this transfer, combined benefits are still causing confusion so, in this article, we look at combined AFPS75 and AFPS15 benefits for those leaving for reasons other than invaliding. Invaliding was covered in the November and December 2018 issues of Pathfinder. Next month’s article will look at combined AFPS05 and AFPS15 benefits.

The article is written against the backdrop of the successful legal challenge by the Judges and Firefighters to the transitional arrangements that accompanied their new 2015 pension schemes. The government has accepted that the judgement will read across to other public sector pension schemes, including AFPS15, and that those discriminated against will have to be given appropriate redress, but resolving this issue will take a long time, so this article describes the situation as is and our advice is to plan on your current position as you know it.
