If my work with the Veterans Gateway has taught me anything it is how many Servicemen and women leave the Service and think little of the value of the pension they have built up during that time.
Most people leave the Armed Forces before reaching the AFPS 75 Immediate Pension (IP) Point, the AFPS 05 Early Departure Payment (EDP) Point or the AFPS 15 EDP Point so they leave with preserved or deferred benefits which they cannot claim for many years.
I am shocked at how many people I come across who did not know that they have a preserved pension; for some there is an excuse, as preserved pensions were not introduced until April 1975 and many of those I deal with are over 70 by the time they read my literature on the Veterans Gateway website and ask the question ‘Have I got a preserved pension?’ But many are younger than that and simply completed their service in blissful ignorance of any further entitlements. So here is a quick run-down of the rules on preserved/deferred pensions for those of you in the Armed Forces now:
