Question of the Week

It’s that time of the week again, and this week we have a question on abatement.

I am a Royal Navy Veteran and getting my military pension. If I take a job with the civil service does this affect my military pension?

The answer is, it really depends on the Civil Service department you’re joining, and how the position is being recruited. Closed recruited posts – where the candidates have to have previous military service and are not open to the general Civil Service community – abatement rules may apply.

We recommend you ask the department whether your military pension will be assessed for abatement*.

*Abatement is where your new salary and pension exceed your previous salary, so the excess is deducted from your pension. This only affects pension and not EDP.
