This week we were asked…

How does having a break in service affect final pension?

As an overview, less reckonable service = less pension.  A break in service of less than 5 years is ‘disregarded’ and considered to be a continuation of service, though obviously the time out of service has not earned any pension. 

If the previous scheme you belonged to closed during your break, then you cannot re-join that closed scheme.  In general terms, the only scheme you can join now is AFPS 15.
