On 17 May, the Government announced* that war widows who forfeited their pensions prior to 2015 could be eligible for a one-off payment of £87,500 utilising a key principle of the Armed Forces Covenant, “that special consideration is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given so much, such as the injured and the bereaved”.
The scheme is promised to be up and running later this year, and we understand that claimants will then have two years to apply.
The Forces Pension Society welcomes this announcement and looks forward to receiving further details on how those eligible can apply,
It is our position, however, that a remedy is needed that will recompense all those that have forfeited their widows/widowers pensions upon remarriage/cohabitation prior to 2015 (not just war widows), and Members can be assured that we will be communicating this to the Government.
