Deadline for voluntary National Insurance contributions extended to April 2025

Government has this morning announced that the deadline for paying extra NICs towards the state pension has been extended to 5th April 2025.

This is great news as many members of the public, including some FPS members, have struggled to get through on HMRC’s National Insurance Office number (0300 200 3500) to obtain the all important 18 digit reference number which is required to enable payment of the voluntary contributions.

Back in March 2023, we reported that the deadline had already been extended because of high levels of public interest.

To be clear this deadline extension enables people to plug gaps in their NI record reaching back to April 2006 (the normal limit is 6 years).

People below state pension age can call the future pension centre helpline to see if they would benefit from paying voluntary NICs  0800 731 0175.
