Question of the Week

We’re ending the week with our final question in this series.

If a reservist officer leaves at contract run out date (midnight of the day before their 60th Birthday) do they qualify immediately or do they have to serve an additional day so they are serving on their 60th birthday?

They should qualify immediately. By convention last day in service is the day before the 60th birthday, Retirement then starts at age 60 (as is required to trigger the immediate payment of benefits). For confirmation the member can feed the data into the online calculator stating last day in service as the day before their 60th birthday.

Well, that’s it for this series. We hope to be back later in the year with some more topical pensions Q&A. Meanwhile, if you missed any of our back catalogue you can find our Question of the Week archive here
