Just a few rumours here that are often put to us…
Myth: I will receive a half pension on leaving after 12 years of service
Fact: Not true. But, you are entitled to a Resettlement Grant (RG) which is often mistaken as being a ‘half pension’. The RG is a one off lump sum payment (currently) £12,692 to help you transition to civilan life. You will need to have served as a Regular, and not entitled to an Early Departure Payment (EDP), ill-health award or an immediate pension. If you receive a RG, you will still be eligible to receive a deferred/preserved pension when you reach age 65/State Pension Age.
Myth: I’m told the Resettlement Grant must be used for resettlement courses or training
Fact: Not true. The Resettlement Grant is a tax-free lump sum intended to help Regular Service personnel settle into civilian life. There is no stipulation as to what you can spend it on on BUT you need to remember that there are breaks in service to be observed and, if you take up another military post too quickly, you might have to repay some or all of your Grant.
Myth: I am on AFPS 05/15 so I will I receive a Resettlement grant from both schemes?
Fact: Unfortunately not, you only receive one Resettlement Grant.
Myth: I haven’t served long enough to get my Early Departure Payment or Immediate Pension, I’m told I don’t need to complete the Pen 1 Form?
Fact: That’s wrong. It’s important that you do still complete your Pen 1 Form
Myth: I need to complete my Pen Form 1 at least 6 months before discharge
Fact: Completion of the Pen Form 1 is not required at a set time before the discharge date. However, it is important to note that it must be completed and submitted to Veterans UK before your final day of service.
