Inheritance Tax on Pensions – Government Consultation and Our Response

Today (22 Jan) was the deadline to respond to the Government’s technical consultation following their announcement that pensions were to become subject to Inheritance Tax from April 2027.

We submitted our response on 13 January, you can read it here.

Given the potential implications for serving military people who die in service but are not married or in a civil partnership, we took the opportunity to challenge the policy itself.

There has been some media coverage on the subject and it was raised during the Armed Forces Commissioner debate in Parliament (Columns 924 – 926) on 21 January.

As the Chief Executive said in a 21 January article in the Daily Telegraph...

“If service people are thinking ‘What if? What if? What’s the Government going to do next to undermine the offer? It’s corrosive.”

We will now wait for the Government’s response to the consultation before deciding our next step, and will keep you posted on developments as they unfold.
